Junior High - 6th Grade

Junior High Retreat Information

What we are learning:
Literature - The sixth graders are reading The Door in the Wall by Marguerite de Angeli. this is the story of a young boy who learned that many doors can be opened to him. It is an inspiring tale told about life in England during the Middle Ages.
As the student study this book, they are researching the Middle Ages and preparing reports to be presented to the class.

History - Sixth grade is studying Roman history from the founding of Rome until the last emperor is forced from the throne. This study is accomplished by looking at the lives of famous Roman leaders (Romulus, Cincinnatus, Camillus, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Augustus, etc). These Romans are viewed as to what is going on while they are living, what they accomplish during their lives, and what their impact is on the Roman world.

From Ray Leatherman

Your child must face many important questions every day - questions about the future, questions about right and wrong, personal problems. The world seems to be definite about only one thing:  we cannot be definite about anything! So where will your child find answers for life's problems?
I believe the Bible has definite answers to life's questions. It is my desire to teach children to dig into God's Word and find practical answers and guidelines for their lives.
In our Bible classes students will gain experience in several areas:  observing Scriptures carefully and accurately, relating Scriptures to personal questions and problems, asking thoughtful questions, using resource materials to find information related to the lesson, and responding personally to what God says.
Bible memory is an important part of our Bible curriculum here at The Heiskell School.  Memory work assignments are given with each lesson. Currently, we use the New International Version in our classrooms. Parents may, however, request permission for their child to memorize verses from a different translation.
I need your help. Encourage your child to discuss with the family the Bible lessons and memory verses. Be available for help or consultation when questions come up. Most of all, let your child know that you consider these Bible classes important and interesting.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share God's wonderful Word with your child.

Science  - We are starting our unit on Chemistry with study of the periodic table and the structure of the atoms of different elements.

Technology - Junior high students earn an internet drivers license in the 6th grade which is then carried over through the 7th and 8th grades. You probably thought that drivers licenses were only required for those who drive cars, however, we issue a driver's license for the information Super Highway. This program will give each of the students the necessary skills to drive on the Super Highway and enable them to make wise choices when doing so.  However, if they choose to make unwise decisions their driver's license will be revoked! This will give the student's greater freedom in using the web for their different research projects.

Music - The Junior High Mixed Ensemble is enjoying listening to and evaluating the music of many different cultures. We began our study at home in the United States by learning the different influences of the many different styles of music in American culture today. If you see a Junior High student in the near future ask them about the song entitled:  “Girls’ Game.” We are rating each piece based on our individual preferences as we listen to each piece as well.

Spring Overnight Trip:
Rock Eagle and The Lost Sea, Chickamaunga Battle Field and Mayfield Dairies
This year we will visit Rock Eagle and the Lost Sea. The Lost Sea is listed in the Guinness Book for World Records as "America's Largest Underground Lake."  The lake is located deep inside Craighead Caverns, in Sweetwater, Tennessee. The class will be spending the night in the cave. Visit the Student Life page for more information.

The Rock Eagle trip is November 29-December 1, 2006.

The Lost Sea trip is April 12-13, 2007.

Teacher Book Club Selection (for parents):
A Rift in Time, A Novel of Beginnings...A Prelude to the End
By Michael Phillips
A novel of action, drama, science and romance. Archaeologist Adam Livingstone develops a genuine relationship with God as he searches for the present day location of the Garden of Eden, after finding Noah's ark. Will he find the Garden of Eden? Did the Tree of Life die? Great recreational reading.

Junior High Highlights

Athletics:
Please visit the Athletics page.

Community Service:
The Junior High Service Committee is active throughout the school year.  They help coordinate Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse.  They provide leadership to the Lawson food and clothing drive at Thanksgiving.  The Lawsons have adopted many children with special needs. They sponsor a student through the Association of Christian Schools International. As the school year progresses, the Junior High Service Committee selects other projects to support.

In addition to service projects outside of the school, the Junior High Service Committee looks for ways to serve The Heiskell School.

Drama Club:
Participation in this club is on a voluntary basis for Junior High students. The club meets once a week to learn and practice skills associated with drama. The students will be involved in dramatic presentations during the school year in chapel.
