Elementary - 2nd Grade

Welcome to second grade!

For a geography lesson in second grade, we had a special visitor from Belize, in Central America, a tiny, peaceful country right below Mexico.  Mason Bussey's mom is the daughter of the deputy prime minister there. She came in full costume, bearing the flag, fruit, sugar cane, a jaguar poster (Belize has the largest jaguar population in the world1) and a CD with dance music. She taught us all to dance - Belize style.  She shared pictures of the Mayan ruins with us.

The Second Grade theme this year is from the song, "Pass It on."

It only takes a spark to get a fire going,

And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.

That's how it is with God's love...

It only takes one of us - one spark, one ray of light to start the fire of His love. Soon it spreads to a classmate, to the entire hall, to the school, to our city, state, country, continent, and all the way to Siberia in Russia the nation that we study and pray for throughout the year.

Field Trips:

Second graders enjoy a trip to the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville the week before Western Dress Day and Fall Festival weekend. This tour correlates with our Social Studies unit on Westward Expansion.

Our Tullie Smith House trip brings to life our early American unit.

What We Are Learning:
Math - The students are working very hard using their problem solving strategies. The children have been taught a variety of ways to solve word problems. They can act out the problem, use objects, choose an operation, draw a picture, and guess and check. The children will be working on place value, mental sums, estimating using rounding, adding 2 and 3 digit numbers.

Language Arts - We have been very busy learning many exciting things in Language Arts.  The students are learning how to proofread everything they turn in.

___ Yes, I wrote in complete sentences.
___ Yes, I started each sentence with a capital letter.
___ Yes, I put a punctuation mark at the end of each sentence.
    ___ Yes, I skipped lines.
___ Yes, I indented my paragraph.
___ Yes, this is my best work.

We focus on learning parts of speech with the Shurley Method. It is great fun to act out the noun and verb jingles.

Great Performance
March 13, 2008, the week before Easter & Spring Break.

Spring Overnight Trip:
The Callaway Gardens tour in Warm Springs, Georgia, compliments the science curriculum, which is "Botany". The next day we visit the FDR exhibit and Little White House.

he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6
