Academic Life

Elementary - 1st Grade

What we are learning:

Bible:

We have begun to learn about the orderly way God created all of the things on the earth. In the coming months, we will study about the life of Jesus while he was on the earth, including his miracles and death on the cross.

We are also memorizing scripture each week.  We have memorized scripture from the book of Genesis that relate to the study of Creation.  Coming up will be many more verses and the memorization of the books of the Old and New Testament.

Math News:

We are beginning to memorize our addition facts and are learning to use them in everyday life.  Our goal is to become more accurate and speedy with the addition and subtraction facts to 20.

We will learn various addition and subtraction strategies using ten frames, dominoes, and other manipulatives!  We will also learn to graph and find the mean, median, and mode of a data set. And, there will be so much more… Counting money, telling time, measurement, and 2-digit addition and subtraction!

What a year of learning we have ahead.

Social Studies News:

First grade is studying all about China throughout the year. We will have lessons about the geography, architecture, culture, communities, people, food and much more.  Most importantly we will learn about how God calls us to do special work for Him, and how He is working in the hearts of the people of China.  We will be learning all about America, including our flag, freedoms, symbols, and great people.  We will visit The National Museum of Patriotism as a culmination of this unit.

We are also learning about our great country, the United States of America!  We are discussing the symbols of the country and we are making a book to record what we learn.  In addition, we are improving our geography skills with lessons in directions, different types of land and water, and so much more.

We are looking forward to exciting projects such as a model log cabin and a report on Abraham Lincoln.  Check back for pictures of our projects.

Language Arts News:

We are also practicing our phonics skills, and we do dictation daily with words that use the phonics rules we have learn! All of this hard work will pay off, and our reading is already showing improvement!

We are working hard on improving our writing skills too!  We are beginning to learn the parts of speech and are identify them in sentences.  Soon, we will be able to write wonderful paragraphs about many different topics.

Science:

We will do science second semester, and we have experiments involving soil and rocks which we can look forward to completing at that time!  We will be learning about recycling and taking care of the earth as well.  Look for pictures of our robot, Robbie, which we will make from household items that would normally be thrown away.

Also to look forward to: units on magnets, health and nutrition, plants, and animals.

Spring Overnight Trip:
Zoo Atlanta Nightcrawlers Program

We will be going to Zoo Atlanta for a special overnight program in which we will get to tour parts of the zoo at night, do special group activities, get a good night's sleep (we hope!) and wake up ready to visit more animals. This trip costs an additional fee beyond regular fees and tuition, and we encourage parents to help their children earn part of their own money for this special experience. We will need drivers to take us to the zoo Thursday night and pick us up Friday morning.

Students will need to wear/bring the following labeled items:

·  Wear your Heiskell Tee-shirts, uniform shorts or skorts, belt, white socks, and tennis shoes.

·  Bring a lightweight sweatsuit because we will put this on over our shorts and sleep in these clothes. You will not need to bring pajamas!

· Wear a jacket if it is chilly outside

· Wear rain gear in case of rain (we will walk outside even if it rains!)

· A labeled, healthy (non-sugary) snack for Thursday evening

· A labeled, non-caffeinated canned or box drink for Thursday evening

· A sleeping bag or roll; teach your child how to roll it back up and have them practice it!

· A small pillow; standard sized ones are difficult for them to manage

· A toothbrush, toothpaste, and bath cloth in a ziplock bag

· A small beanie baby or other stuffed animal (optional)

Students will need to eat dinner Thursday night before returning to school.  Breakfast will be provided at the zoo Friday morning. We will sleep in carpeted rooms in the Education Building.
