Junior High - 8th Grade

Coming Up:

The 8th grade will be traveling to Kennesaw State University to view the Anne Frank exhibit in conjunction with our reading of "The Diary of Anne Frank."

What We Are Learning:
History - The eighth graders will be looking into the period after the American Revolution. They will study the Articles of the Confederation and the problems associated with this type of government. The students will then focus on the development of the Constitution and the ratification process. Afterwards, the study will look into how the principles employed in the Constitution actually work.

Literature - The eighth grade is reading Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals. This is a true story of a young lady who became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Melba Pattillo Beals was one of nine teenagers who were chosen to integrate Little Rock's Central High School. It is a sobering book for all as we read of her courage in facing the adversities that came her way. This books comes highly recommended for all.

Science - We are continuing our study of earth science. The eighth grade will be working on science research papers and displays to be finished for the science fair.

8th Grade Latin - We are using Latin for Americans.

From Ray Leatherman

Your child must face many important questions every day - questions about the future, questions about right and wrong, personal problems. The world seems to be definite about only one thing:  we cannot be definite about anything!  So where will your child find answers for life's problems?
I believe the Bible has definite answers to life's questions. It is my desire to teach children to dig into God's Word and find practical answers and guidelines for their lives.
In our Bible classes students will gain experience in several areas:  observing Scriptures carefully and accurately, relating Scriptures to personal questions and problems, asking thoughtful questions, using resource materials to find information related to the lesson, and responding personally to what God says.
Bible memory is an important part of our Bible curriculum here at The Heiskell School.  Memory work assignments are given with each lesson. Currently, we use the New International Version in our classrooms. Parents may, however, request permission for their child to memorize verses from a different translation.
I need your help. Encourage your child to discuss with the family the Bible lessons and memory verses. Be available for help or consultation when questions come up.  Most of all, let your child know that you consider these Bible classes important and interesting.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share God's wonderful Word with your child.

Technology - Junior high students earn an internet drivers license in the 6th grade which is then carried over through the 7th and 8th grades. You probably thought that drivers licenses were only required for those who drive cars, however, we issue a driver's license for the information Super Highway. This program will give each of the students the necessary skills to drive on the Super Highway and enable them to make wise choices when doing so.  However, if they choose to make unwise decisions their driver's license will be revoked! This will give the student's greater freedom in using the web for their different research projects.

Music - The students in the Junior High Mixed Ensemble are enjoying listening to and evaluating the music of many different cultures. We began our study at home in the United States by learning the different influences of the many different styles of music in American culture today. If you see a Junior High student in the near future ask them about the song entitled:  “Girls’ Game.”  We are rating each piece based on our individual preferences as we listen to each one.

Spring Overnight Trip:
Fall 2006 - 7th and 8th graders visit Washington and Williamsburg.

Junior High Highlights

Athletics:
Please visit the Athletics page.

Community Service:
The Junior High Service Committee is active throughout the school year.  They help coordinate Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse.  They provide leadership to the Lawson food and clothing drive at Thanksgiving.  The Lawsons have adopted many children with special needs. They sponsor a student through the Association of Christian Schools International. As the school year progresses, the Junior High Service Committee selects other projects to support.

In addition to service projects outside of the school, the Junior High Service Committee looks for ways to serve The Heiskell School.

Drama Club:
Participation in this club is on a voluntary basis for Junior High students. The club meets once a week to learn and practice skills associated with drama. The students will be involved in dramatic presentations during the school year in chapel.
